P/ wip H/ i fear that war is looming. i pray to god every night and day that it may not be so. i hear whispers scurrying ceaselessly in between the floorboards. they bunch themselves beneath the wallpaper and recently they've started to grow exponentially in number. i shall describe them as if they are mice. it has not truly gone to bloodshed yet, but it might as well be. my brother has enlisted in the army's ranks. in his eyes was a great sadness and pride. looking at him and his fragile face— i wanted to destroy it all. i could not go with him. they told me that i was too frail. i cannot sleep because of the guilt. the thought that, if i had gone with him, if i was stronger, he would live instead of die. each night, i hear screams. they are keening knives. they carve my sanity from my mind like a tooth through fat and flesh. there is little and less food. i have not seen the battle yet, only heard it like bullets from a distant shore, but i hate it with such a strong burning in my chest. the war has made my home into a stranger's planet. the skies grow more smokey every day. the houses, boarded up. some people nail white kerchiefs on their doors. i don't. they've taken us away. i don't exactly know where i am. the soldiers that took us by the arms (and sometimes ankles, if anyone resisted. i counted at least fifteen empty eyes, fifteen pairs of blue hands and blue feet. long live the revolution.) looked more wolf than machine. this angered me. why couldn't our enemy be heartless, bloodless creatures? the one that forced me to my feet looked no older than my brother. the children and women were placed in large houses, face after moribund face. the men and i were placed instead in trenches. they are ugly. they are deep, dark scores in the earth. i swear to god that they smell of the devil. i hold my breath for fear that it might discolour my soul. i've met someone here. i've discovered that i may love them. war does strange things to your head.
